Ashley Ridge High School Air Force JROTC
Ashley Ridge High School, Summerville SC 29485
In rocketry, cadets will learn how to build and launch rockets. We will start off the year by learning the basic parts of a rocket and the safety precautions that come with launching rockets. After cadets learn about how a rocket works, they will take a short safety test before they’re allowed to launch. This ensures that they know what to do when it comes to our first launch day. Over the year, cadets will shoot 5 successful launches to earn a rocketry badge that is worn on their dress blue uniforms. A launch is considered successful if it rises into the air, ejects its parachute, and slopes back down without breaking. A launch is considered unsuccessful if the rocket breaks, is lost, or does not shoot off. This year, cadets will also split up into teams, choose a commander, and launch their rockets for height or proximity to a certain point to get their names on a plaque that we will put in the trophy cases. We will do this periodically throughout the year for fun during practice. When it gets toward the middle of the year cadets will watch a movie related to aviation and fill in questions that are answered within the movie. The really exciting part about rocketry this year, though, is that we will be building a larger scale rocket so we can compete in the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC). It will take a whole year to plan and build this rocket, so we will compete in the actual competition in the 2012 / 2013 school year. The TARC competition is a national competition where the first 1,000 schools or organizations apply will compete in a qualifying round, then the remaining teams will compete in a final competition. It is a hard competition to compete in, but it will be fun and worth it in the end if we place. We are currently looking for sponsors for the rocketry team, so we can get funding to build this rocket. So, if you know or would like to donate to the team that would be greatly appreciated! Anybody can join rocketry that is in AFJROTC at Ashley Ridge, and I hope that everybody who joins the rocketry team this year is excited and ready to launch rockets!
